Veterinary Technician
My Story
I am originally from Washington State. I met my husband when he was in the Navy stationed in Washington. He is from the Tomball area so when he was discharged we came down here to be closer to his family.
I have always had a passion for animals, but I never knew what I wanted to do with them. After some dead-end jobs I decided to pursue my love of animals by becoming a vet-assistant at a clinic in Washington. I loved it so much that realized this is the career for me.
I am planning on going to school within the next couple of years to become a licensed vet tech but my skills thus far, have all very hands-on learning from some amazing veterinarians and other technicians.
As a vet tech we have a number of responsibilities. We are responsible get monitoring anesthesia, placing catheters, administering medications (both injectable and by mouth), cleaning surgical instruments and wrapping surgery packs. Some days are more challenging than others depending on the patients but it is our job to make sure the patient and staff are safe and we are able to do what is best for them.
My mom is an elementary school teacher. She has taught grades kindergarten-5th grade. Currently she is teaching 1st grade and has been teaching since my older sister was a baby. She enjoys crafting in her free time. My dad works on broken ATM's. He recently moved to Las Vegas and has been enjoying the sunshine. He loves baseball, specifically the San Francisco Giants.
I have 6 animals currently, 5 dogs and 1 cat. My oldest dog, Bridgett, I have had for 10 years. She is a lab/corgi/shepherd mutt. She is my goofy old lady who has been with me through so much. She gets to do pretty much anything she wants, she gets the most treats and loves to sun bathe. Seeing her get older has been hard because it makes me remember that everyone's time is short.
Lainey is one of my miniature dachshunds. She is a spunky little girl who thinks shes the size of a wolf. She is feisty and playful but at the end of the day she just wants to curl up in your lap and be under a blanket. She was the first dog we got after moving to Texas, and she was my first ever puppy!
A client came into my old clinic with this Doberman mix puppy they had found on Mother's Day a couple years ago. He was coming in for some vaccines and treatment. I was talking with the owner and she said that she was looking for a home for him. Instantly I knew he would be mine. Convincing my husband was another story. But as soon as they met each other, it was just as clear to Ben as it was to me why we needed this dog. He has been my most frustrating dog but he's also one of the sweetest. He has truly always fit right in to our home.
Eleanor is our pitbull and she loves to compete doing lure races, treadmill runs, and wall jumps! It takes a lot of time and dedication to get her to where she is today, and to get both her and us better. We are very proud of her!
My other miniature dachshund is Diesel. He is very goofy and thinks he's as big as my doberman. Diesel and Eleanor are best friends! They will wrestle and cuddle together all day.
My cats name is Ash. We got him when we were still in Washington, shortly after Ben and I got together. Neither of us had ever had a cat before so it was quite the adventure. Thankfully Ash turned out to be a good kitten and a great cat. We call him our 6th dog because be will beg for food and plays with the dachshunds.
I am personally very interested in surgery. Working at my old clinic I was the surgery technician and although the surgeries we did there were soft tissue and dentals, I still enjoyed it. I love that I am able to be part of a team that can give an animal a better life because of our doctors.
