My Story
My family moved to Houston when I was in junior high. Prior to that, I lived all over the world and moved a lot as a kid. After graduating high-school, I continued to move all over the country for college and training but moved back to Houston in 2013.
When I was very young, I would tell people I wanted to be a vet. I remember being told how difficult it was. For a while I considered other career paths including a short period of time when I wanted to be a rock start. I went to undergrad planning to be pre med but then switched to pre vet and went on to go to vet school and a residency.
My undergraduate degree is from the University of Texas at Austin. I went on to get a masters degree from Texas State University before completing my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University. After vet school, I did a one-year rotating internship at Louisiana State University and then a three-year surgical residency at the University of Illinois. Following my residency, I spent several years as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois teaching veterinary surgery to students, interns, and surgery residents.
As a board-certified veterinary surgeon, I do all types of surgery including orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery and neurosurgery.
My specific interest is traumatic orthopedic disease and surgery in exotics. I've authored multiple book chapters on surgery in exotics. In addition to my clinical duties I continues to publish case reports, scientific studies, review articles, and book chapters. I am also an active consultant on Veterinary Information Network (VIN) and enjoy the opportunity to reach out and help veterinarians from all over the world.
My family members are a group of rescue dogs that I refer to as a "mutley crew." Their interests are eating, sleeping, and keeping my house in disarray. Gertie, Calvin, Bobbie, Angus, Lt. Dan, Peanut, Lee, Ronnie, Sgt Stubby, and Tubbs are all rescue dogs that have crossed my path needing surgery in some capacity and a soft place to land. Of course, my solo cat, Richard, is also a rescue and really he runs the house.
Traveling is a passion of mine. I love to travel to remote areas where there are fewer people around and little or no evidence of people's impact of the world. I also enjoy scuba diving, hiking and wildlife photography including underwater photography.
